EU in the World
Prerequisites
This course is intended for Master’s level students. It is expected that students are aware of the basic concepts of international relations, EU institutions, decision-making process.
Summary of the course
The course examines the EU’s role in international arena, its external relations and foreign policy by geographical areas. Equally an approach to the institutions functioning in foreign policy and security and defence policy is included.
Within this framework, it tries to outline the EU strengths and weaknesses as international actor, its impact on world governance and on international issues relevant to European interests as well as the global financial crisis consequences on its international role.
Learning objectives
- To give a comprehensive view of the EU external action and its problems
- To compare the EU to other global actors.
- To analyze the developments in Security and Defence Policy and the EU role as a security actor.
- To know the main EU external areas of activity and the different level of integration within each of them
- The students are expected to evaluate the reasons for a EU position (or lack of it) in different issues, to know which possible actions one can expect from the EU and choose the suitable negotiation approach to Brussels.
